SHARKETTES WIN AREA; FACE SINTON IN REGIONAL THURSDAY AT GOLIAD

Enjoying their first journey in the state playoffs, the Palacios Sharkettes swept past LaFeria in the Area round last week and now advance to the third rung on the playoff ladder to take on Sinton in the Regional Quarterfinals.

The best of three challenge with the 25-6 Lady Pirates, champions of District 30-3A, is scheduled for Thursday and Saturday at Goliad.

The first game will be 6 p.m. Thursday, with the second game Saturday at 2 p.m. and the third game, if necessary, to start about 30 minutes after that game.

The winner will advance to the Regional Semifinals next week, against the winner between Devine and LaVernia.

The Sharkettes of coach Yvette Garcia, now 16-8, didn’t need three games to dispose of LaFeria – they swept the Lady Lions in two straight.

In the Friday opener, played at Sinton, the PHS girls cruised to a 7-2 victory.

Moving to Calallen on Saturday, the Sharkettes spotted LaFeria a 3-0 first inning lead then slammed the door shut behind Ellaina Pena’s outstanding pitching performance to bounce the Lady Lions, 8-3.

“I’m really, really proud of the girls,” coach Garcia said. “They are hitting real good, playing good defensively, Ellaina is pitching well and they all have the desire to continue. I’m excited.”

After the first inning in the clinching Saturday game, when LaFeria scored its three on two hits and two errors, the Lady Lions had no hits and only one baserunner— on an error, and Pena faced a minimum of 18 would-be hitters over the next six innings.

The Sharkettes, who would pound out 15 hits, scored their first run in the second when Erica Serna led-off with a triple and scored. They tied it in the third as Vanessa Eufracio, Christen Sandoval and Pena hit consecutive singles to start and with one out Serna singled home two.

Palacios went ahead in the fourth as Brittany Garcia slapped a two-bagger and scored as Chelsey Kubecka followed with a single. Kubecka and Hilary Garcia, who followed with another single, also scored to send the Sharkettes up 6-3.

Audrey Kubecka and Brittany Garcia scored the final two runs in the fifth as the Sharkettes came up with singles by Serna, Brittany Garcia, Chelsey Kubecka, Hilary Garcia and Eufracio.

While allowing only two hits, Pena struck out two and walked none.

In the 7-2 win on Friday, the Sharkette bats sparkled with 15 hits, three by Sandoval, two each by Hilary Garcia, Eufracio, Bethany Martino, Serna and Audrey Kubecka.

Hilary Garcia and Pena sent the Sharkettes ahead in the first when they scored after each had singled. Sandoval scored a solo run in the third, Audrey Kubecka and Hilary Garcia scored the eventual winning runs in the fourth, Sandoval tallied again in the fifth and Brittany Garcia brought in the final run in the sixth.

LaFeria, held to four hits and no walks by Pena while eight Lady Lions struck out, scored one run in the first on a single and double and their second run in the fourth on a lead-off triple and a groundout. The other hit, a harmless single, came with two out in the seventh.

Dist. 29-3A’s Yoakum also remains in the playoffs and faces Raymondville in its Regional Quarterfinals test this week.

SHARK 1600-METER RELAYERS RUN FOR THE GOLD AT STATE MEET FRIDAY

Palacios High School seniors Jordan Anderson, Lee Cink and Russell Laws, along with junior James Murphy, carry the baton of hopes for Palacios High School in the State Class 3A Track Meet at Austin Friday.

The foursome will run against seven other Class 3A teams in the 1600-meter relay race at 9:15 p.m. Friday in Austin’s Mike Myers Stadium.

“To be one of only eight teams from the entire state in this event is a great honor for these boys,” PHS boys track coach Bill Fort says.

The PHS squad qualified when they were silver medalists in the regional meet on a time of 3:30.06.

They hope to accomplish what the Shark relay team did in 1967 – win Gold. That year, the squad of Donald Washington, Roland Flores, Ernest Haynes and Joe Buckley clocked a then record time of 3:18.50 to win the state 2A title. That was also the year that the Sharks won the state team title while Tidehaven claimed the 1A team championship.

The following year, Flores and Buckley returned along with Henry Washington and Bruce Remlinger to take 4th at state. In 1969, Ricky Garza joined Remlinger, Washington and Buckley to place 7th.

VALIANT SHARK EFFORT FALLS SHORT AGAINST MATHIS IN BI-DISTRICT

The Palacios Sharks, in the baseball playoffs for the first time in 11 years, lost the deciding third game of their exciting best of three Bi-District duel with Mathis, 12-7, Saturday at Rockport, to finish with a 13-12 season record.

The Sharks won the first game of the playoff on Friday in eight innings, 6-5, surviving three Mathis homers in the seventh that tied in the game then overcame a one-run lead the Pirates scored in the top of the eighth.

In the first game on Saturday, a five-run uprising in the fifth inning overcame Palacios’ 7-4 lead as the Pirates won, 11-8, to square the series.

In the deciding third game, the Sharks took a 4-0 lead in the second inning on consecutive singles by David Sandoval, Russell Laws and Adrian Galvan, followed by a walk to PJ Garcia and a balk, then with one out, an error. Mathis tied it in its turn with three walks, passed ball, sacrifice and a two-out single.

Palacios regained the lead with three in the third on singles by David Hunt and Laws, walk to Ken Garcia and a 2-out single by PJ Garcia.

The Sharks missed a run in the fourth when Laws clubbed a one-out triple, but was left stranded.

Palacios’ 7-4 lead evaporated in the fifth when Mathis seven runs on two singles, three walks, a hit batsman, passed ball, fielder’s choice and a wild pitch.

The Pirates added a final unearned run in the sixth on a 2-out walk, followed by a stolen base, error and wild pitch.

The Sharks outhit the Pirates, 13-7, with Laws and Hunt each having three safeties and Sandavol, two. Ken Garcia, who relieved starting pitcher Hunt in the second was tagged with the loss.

FIRST GAME
In the first game of Bi-District, the Sharks scored twice in the third when Eric Rojas ledoff with a walk, stole second and scored on an error after Will Hansen flew out. Hunt followed with a double and scored on two passed balls.

Palacios made it 4-0 with two more in the fifth when Kyle Hamlin opened with a double and, after Sandoval whiffed, Laws crunched a 2-run homer.

With their last chance in regulation play, the Pirates struck with a fury in the top of the seventh to tie the game. The first batter walked and with one out, Santos DeLeon blasted a 2-run homer. Craig Wilson relieved starting pitcher Hansen and retired the next batter on a grounder. Then came back-to-back home runs by Ray Stevenson and Victor Alvarado to tie the game.

Mathis took a 5-4 lead in the top of the extra inning eighth on an unearned run as the lead-off batter singled, went to second on a fielder’s choice, to third on a sacrifice and scored on a fielding error.

The scrappy Sharks pulled on the victory in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Galvan doubled, went to third on a fielder’s choice as PG Garcia reached on an error. Both runners scampered home and the game ended as Wilson cracked a single.

Wilson was the winning pitcher.

SECOND GAME
The Sharks battled back three times in the first game on Saturday, twice to tie the game and once to take the lead before Mathis plated five runs in the fifth on six hits, a walk and an error to take command for keeps.

After Mathis took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Sharks tied it in the second as Sandoval singled with one out, stole second and third then scored as the Sharkettes added four walks and left the sacks loaded.

Mathis scored twice in the third, but the Sharks scored three in the top of the fourth for a 4-3 lead on singles by Hansen and Hunt, walk to PJ Garcia and three errors. Mathis re-tied in the bottom of the fourth on an lead-off double and 2-out single.

Palacios surged ahead, 7-4, in the top of the fifth as Sandoval opened with a solo homer. Laws walked and stole second. Galvan walked, but was forced at second on PJ Garcia’s fielder’s choice as Laws scored. Garcia pilfered second and scored on Rojas’ 2-out single.

Then came Mathis’ 5-run explosion in the fifth that iced the outcome. Palacios did tack on another run in the sixth only to have Mathis punch over two more in the last half of the frame. Palacios’ run came when Hunt was safe on an error, stole second and later scored on another error.

Wilson, relieved by Sandoval, was the losing pitcher.

BRITTANY GARCIA ON ACADEMIC ALL-STATE BASKETBALL TEAM

Palacios High School senior student-athlete Brittany Garcia has been selected to the Class 3A girls Academic All-State Basketball Team for 2007-08 by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

To achieve the honor, a student-athlete had be either be selected to an All-District first or second team, have an ACT score of 20 or higher and an overall 90 average for the last seven semesters in the classroom.

“I am very proud of Brittany’s accomplishments,” Sharkette basketball coach Aaron Wollam stated as he noted that only 38 student athletes in the entire state had earned the Academic All-State recognition.
