SHARK ID, REGULATION WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY IN PORT LAVACA
Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. coastal fisheries biologists will host a workshop Wednesday (July 1) in Port Lavaca to help anglers navigate new shark regulations that go into effect Sept. 1, 2009.
The workshop will be from 6-8 p.m. at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds Auditorium.
The new regulations increase the minimum total length for most shark species from 24 inches total length to 64 inches total length, except for Atlantic sharpnose, blacktip and bonnethead sharks, which will remain at 24 inches total length.
It will focus on shark identification and changes in the regulations. Similar shark species and distinguishing characteristics will be presented to allow anglers to identify the prohibited species, and differentiate between the 24-inch and 64-inch minimum size species.
For the allowable shark species, the bag limit will remain one shark per person per day, with a two shark possession limit.
In addition, a prohibited list (zero bag limit) will be established for the following 21 species: Atlantic angel, Basking, Bigeye sand tiger, Bigeye sixgill, Bigeye thresher, Bignose, Caribbean reef, Caribbean sharpnose, Dusky, Galapagos, Longfin mako, Narrowtooth, Night, Sandbar, Sand tiger, Sevengill, Silky, Sixgill, Smalltail, Whale, and White.

PALACIOS SHARKS QUALIFY FOR STATE 7-0N-7 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
The Palacios Sharks’ 7-on-7 football team Saturday won their way to the State Championship Tournament for the second time in three years, although a violation of rules by officials at the qualifying tournament (QT) at Cuero prevented Palacios from playing for the QT championship. In Pool A play of the Cuero tournament, Palacios, Cuero and Rice Consolidated each finished 2-1. The Sharks lost to Rice, 29-7, but defeated Cuero, 33-26, and Goliad, 26-12. Cuero beat Goliad and Rice. Rice had previously qualified for the state tournament and should not have figured in the tiebreaker for Pool A, which gave the advantage to Palacios as a result of the Sharks’ victory over Cuero. However, the Cuero tournament officials placed Cuero in the championship game against Pool B winner Edna, with both teams to advance to the state tourney. While Cuero was celebrating what was thought to become its first trip to the state tournament, Palacios athletic director-head football coach Mike Treybig was on the phone. “I called coach Tim Tekyl at Rosenberg Terry about the injustice He is on the board of directors for the State 7-on-7. He contacted the South director, Greg McCraig, who called Mark Reeve (Cuero AD-coach) and told them they needed to make it right,” Treybig said. The tie-breaker on pool play states: “If two or more teams are tied with identical records, the first tie breaker will be head to head competition, next total points scored, next total points allowed (forfeitures, and teams already qualified will not factor into the tiebreaker. If the tie still persists, a coin flip will then determine the team to advance.” Palacios and Edna are, officially, the teams advancing to the July 9-10 state tournament in College Station. “I am glad that there are people still left in this world that are willing to right a wrong and stick up for the little guy,” he added. Coach Treybig said donations to help offset the expenses for the 7-on-7 Sharks to compete are welcome. For more information, contact him at the PHS fieldhouse or call 972-3368. In addition to Palacios and Edna, other teams that have qualified for the small school division (classes 3A-1A) state tournament are Cameron, Marion, Hitchcock, Navasota, Carthage, Hardin-Jefferson, Bandera, Burnet, China Spring, Gatesville, Lago Vista, Rice Consolidated, Anahuac and Hardin from the North QTs. Teams from the South QTs are McGregor, Wimberley, Glen Rose, West, Graham, Lovejoy, Brownwood, Celina, Melissa, Pilot Point, Abilene Wylie, Goldthwaite, Palestine Westwood, Willis Point and the final two teams to be selected this Saturday (June 27) at a Brownwood QT. |
