Happy Anniversary to Guy and Colleen Claybourn on the 29th of November. I lived in Palacios from 1984-1990. These were wonderful years as Palacios has such wonderful people. Bobby Gene and I live next to my mother. My oldest, Donnie, is here in Norman too. We have lost both of my brothers and Dad (all to heart problems). But the rest of us keep on keeping on. We know we have a good life and enjoy it to the fullest. Anyone out there remember me, give me an email and tell me what's going on down there. Donnie happened across this site and I am thrilled. Went thru the archives (obits) and realize I have lost a lot of friends. My heart goes out the the families.

Palacios seems like the only home town I ever had because we moved several times a year. My best memories are when I lived there. I was able to take piano lessons from Nell Mize at Trinity Baptist Church. I played my first Revival when I was about 11 or 12 years. I am playing as much as I can in the Houston, Baytown, Deer Park areas.

Okay...thanks to all out there who have emailed (or called) after my previous guestbook entry. I actually have heard from quite a few people and I even brought my family by one July Saturday evening in 2000 (during the heat wave) for their first visit. My wife is a California girl, and had not been to Texas before.
Simple pleasures as it was thrilling to see that choppy brown bay water for the first time in about 15 years.
To the lady and long lost friend from Georgia who called in January 2000, email me and I will send you the picture(s) as promised. I lost your address (we sold a house and bought another - so who knows where the address is) and I do not even know your last name. Sounds pathetic, hunh?
It was also interesting to read the story about Mr. Linton. He never shared much of his personal life during class, so it was neat to read about all his exploits before becomming a teacher. I just remember him always telling us that we must fold our homework lengthwise and re-copy our notes. Never really did that until college, but it sure helped! He did tell us why a 2x4 piece of lumber was a 2x4 and that he really did not appreciate that the brake shop allowing a novice to work on his brakes. I have had the opportunity to teach Algebra myself, which I though was really cool, because Mr. L and Ms. Arredondo made it look easy.
I did read that Mr. L. was very sick, so I do hope that he pulls through ok. Thanks to Mrs. Linton for writing the wonderful article.
Okay...I've digressed.

This month, PHS class of 1992 met for our 10 year reunion. It was nice to meet with all of the people that I spent K-12 with. Those years were full of great memories. While some were pleasant, and we all had a laugh about, others were sad. But through it all they made us better people and I am grateful for those memories. It seems like just yesterday we were walking the halls together. After thinking back upon the times we all shared together, I realize how fortunate we were to have grown up together in this small town.
I would like to thank all of the people that helped put the reunion together. The class of 92' seems to have done well for themselves and it all got started in the classrooms at PISD. Thank you Palacios for the fond memories and friends.

After chatting with a recent patient of mine here in the hospital, it came up that I was originally from Palacios. He asked if I knew much about the 1964 State Championship Football Team because he said that he had played for Marlin High School - the team that Palacios beat. What he remembered most was that Palacios had a running back that he said was the best he had ever played against. He couldn't remember his name, but he did say that he "was beaten to a bloody pulp" by this back. Who was the running back?

I probably am just speaking for just me, but it's fair to think that maybe it's for more. Palacios is one of those towns portrayed in the movies as one of wonder, and a place where dreams can come true. And no doubt, it usually portrays the girl you could go fishing with, talk on the phone with, hang out with at a Dair Queen - watch Cheerleading or something at a Friday night Football Game - maybe she was in the band. Well that girl was real for me. The kind of girl you hold hands with and then smell her perfume on your clothes all day long while the teacher tried to teach over the aroma. That's what Palacios gave to me. The kind of girl whose parents liked to have folks over for cooking and made you leave right after midnight. As I've been out into the bigger cities in America, those girls from a place like Palacios are hard to find. So if there is never anything more than that to be fond of Palacios, I thank her for letting me see beauty and innocence the way I have never found elsewhere. She is married now, I know, and her husband has to be the happiest man alive, as he gets to have this beauty any time he blinks. That is why Palacios rules. It has the beauty within it, all the time. And the fondest memory I have is sitting with this woman, watching the sun rise over the Pavillion, and getting to hang out in a town and place which will never quite be replaced in beauty. Thank you. And sincerely miss you. T'was only 3 years of my life, but the impact will be remembered forever.
