What up people of Palacios and my fellow graduates of 1999! It's me Jamal again wanting to say that as boring as Palacios can be, it is always nice to come back to a quiet more homely place away from the lights, honking horns all day, and pushy tourists in Times Square. When you live in NYC you tend to forget the the moon actually DOES exsist. I am already used to NYC so it doesn't really bother me much, but it makes you appreciate the small town life a little more. Since the Guestbook is temporarily closed, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr. Quinton Foster on breaking my 34-year old discus record at PHS. I've been following Quinton's progress (thanks to The Beacon Online and also to a timely email from Coach Arnesen) and want to wish him well at Kingsville and hopefully in Austin at the State Meet.
I still have very fond memories of the many solitary hours of practicing, the camaraderie of the track meets, and especially of winning state in Austin as a senior.

It's a shame that people do not know how to respect something as wonderful as your guest book.
I was born in Palacios in 1963. I only lived there until I was 5 years old. I still have family and friends there. I enjoyed reading the guest book because it gave me a chance to find out what what was going on in town. Sometimes I saw names I remembered and it gave me a chance to get in touch with them.
I hope you can find a way to fix this problem and get the guestboo back on line.

Nick, thank you for finally taking a stand against the people who chose to trash this site. The delight in finding a posting from someone we've not heard from in years is offset by the negativity and trashiness of others. This is a good way of keeping the integrity intact.

REPLY: Although I do not really like to see the 'negativity' about the community expressed, that was not the reason for temporarily halting Guestbook entries. Folks are entitled to express their views....whether they are good or bad and whether I agree with them or not. However, it was the offensive and obscene entries (many of which are caught and deleted before the majority see them) that was the cause of the problem.
The Guestbook, as well as the entire Beacon Online site was created as a free, unfinancially supported service for the community and former residents. Over the past 3-4 years, the Guestbook has enabled a vast number of current and former residents to get in contact with each other. That was one of the reason for establishing it.
Unfortunately, I do not have the time to 'babysit' the Guestbook every day to ensure that obscene and offensive comments that are posted by a very few jerks are removed. Hopefully, I can come up with a feasible way to reactivate it. (Nick West)

First, I want to congratulate the Sharkettes on their Victory Friday over San Diego. We were delighted to be able to attend the game and watch our granddaughter be part of the winning team. Well, Palacios, I just might be coming to visit sooner thatn I thought. I actually look forward to seeing that crappy little shrimp smelling town and say to myself, "Glad I left there and glad I dont miss like everyone else that was warped by it." The town smells like shrimp. You say to yourself, "I think it used to when I first moved here, but it deosnt smell like that anymore." It does, you just got used to it. Take my word for it, or go away for a week or two in the summer and come back, youwill know what I mean. I dont mean to rag on the town, but it IS in the middle of nowhere, and doesnt even have a McDonalds. last week's article on wagner hospital with a oppinion of one of the customer there was helpful to remind me how valuable wagner is. I kept going there for a sore throat and Dr. Farell, is that spelled right? suggested using salt. Salt also worked for my impacted wisdom tooth that kept getting infected. It healed by itself, and I didn't get it pulled.

So for all you kids who think partying is fun drinking is fun drugs is fun look at me i'm in my own hell. So be real with your self you will face the real world one day and it can make you or break you. it broke me. Wow...who would of ever thought...Since High School I have have lived in North Carolina, California, and in Japan. I have worked as a Marine, ran two stores a Reebok outlet and a ice creamery, and been and youth minister for three different churches. I am now back in school. Hey Palacios! It's nice to see all the familiar names that bring up such fond memories. My family hasn't lived in Palacios for years, but I often think of those who were like family to me. The Koch's, The Harvey's, and the members of the Church of Christ. I think of you often and fondly. My daughter is now the age I was when we moved to Palacios and as I see her live her childhood, I recall my experiences which bring me back to Palacios and all the friends and teachers that made my childhood so special. Here it is the holiday season and everyone should be in the holiday spirit. Well, I just got a tearfull phone call from my niece, who still lives in Palacios and whose mother has died. She said she was so tired of defending the memory of her mother, who had a "drinking" problem. I told her maybe she should start telling "why" she had a drinking problem. That her husband, who came from a "respectable" family was constantly abusing her physically as well as mentally. Of course this was not known to the general public, only that "she" was seen as having a drinking problem. The stigma of not who you are but who you came from is so crippling in the Palacios area and has been for years. The best thing I did was to leave Palacios so I could have a better chance at life than what Palacios had to offer. I miss the few truely sincere people who live there, but these are few.

Hey.... I look at the Palacios Beacon EVERY week... just to see what is going on. I was surprised to see that Jereme had 'posted' in the Guestbook... *laughing* I guess all three of us (Jereme, Lindsay & myself) miss Palacios a wee bit! Funny how life goes on & things change.... our lives have definitely changed, but we are 'survivors' & I have to admit that I am VERY proud of my kiddos!! Jereme is a bit bashful, but he is doing quite well in school... *smile* Lindsay is a junior in high school now & working. She is looking forward to her future & has BIG plans for a career in Architecture... what a gal, huh? As all that know us & care about us know... life took a 'bad' turn for us... we have rebounded.... it's great to be alive!! Iowa is a beautiful state.... seems to be a bit 'protected' from much of the turmoil, hate & disgust that exists in so many communities. There is a feeling of 'safeness/wholeness' here..... a community of people that care & accept wholeheartedly. IF I had known this many years ago, I would have been here sooner! We would LOVE to hear from you.... *smile*
