Hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful day we are having. Bet the bay is beautiful. A comment to the writers on the comments concerning someones education and misspelling. Maybe someone who can not spell and use words right is not so much uneducated, as they are handicapped. Maybe someone who can't write words right has had a stroke in the past or other tragedies. Or has had a brain tumor, etc. THink about that. Hello Kim.

On to the subject of the gentleman's club that they are attempting to locate in Palacios. You say that there are too many bars here already but infact there is only mary's place. This place may not be of the highest quality but apparently it brings some patrons a place to relax and fish. Yes some places such as adult places of entertainment do have problems with drug trafficing. But with a close eye and a heavy hand the owners can stamp out any such problems. I have worked in Gentlemans clubs before and we solved a problem such as the narcotics problem you are so worried about. So please consider these things Kellie before you go talking about something you have no knowledge what so ever of . Sincerely Charlie Haggerton.

Well I think Palacios should not allow a strip club we already have to many bars in this town and what Palacios needs in a good grocery store and a decent resturant. If Palacios allows this strip club in, it make Palacios seem once a nice place but now a discusting place. It makes my sking crawl to think about, becasue I think also there is to much vinlonce now. With the bars in town. I dont now but if Palacios city councle has any resepct for Palacios they would not put the strip club in. And if they have to help to give money to put the club in here, why not give to the people in Palacios that needs it like The low in come housing authority and friends of elderly citiens and our school districs. Just keep in mind of the kids in this town alos!!!

Hey class of 95 what's up? I miss good old Palacios. I've travelled to a lot of different places since High School and no place is the same. When I've been away for a long time I like to drive into town with the windows down and just breath in that good salt air. I hope that Palacios is always around for me to come back to. It would be a shame if it just continued its spiral downward because of economic reasons. If the people of Palacios care enough they should become more involved in the economic developement of the town. Lure some investors in, sell Palacios as a winter resort for the snowbirds. Port Lavaca does it so why not Palacios? Well good luck . E-mail me class of 95!

I think the people posting in this forum can be divided between those who appreciate Palacios and those who don't. I think which camp you're in is entirely dependent on your age. I loved Palacios as a child, hated it as a teen-ager. Now that I am several decades and hundreds of miles removed from it, I look back with love and appreciation at what a wonderful place I grew up in. Yes, where people come out to their front yards to see where the sirens are going because they care about their neighbors. I'm glad to hear that the people in Palacios still care enough to do that.
sayso23 <sayso23@hotmail.com>

To Original Settler, I can tell you are from palacios.....UH, DUH....I bet whenever you hear sirens. yall take off and see where the sirens are......But then again i guess all of palacios does.......i'm from palacios and its a nice little town. But, it is what it is; a hick town. I'm sorry but thats the truth. Certain people run the town cause of the power and the money they have. But send those same people to Houston and they would look and act like Barney Fife when he visits Mount Pilot. I'm not trying to put down Palacios, but im just stating my opinion. Just because it's a hick town doesnt mean its not a nice place to live. A matter a fact i think its a place to live because it is a hick town. You have lots of people who think they are where its at, but in reality they are actually about 5-7 yrs behind the rest of the world. I go back once in awhile and see bunch of little punks trying to be tough. They are just punks who wont fight one on one. And as for the Sports in Palacios, the ONLY thing yall can brag about is "1964 STATE CHAMPS RULE" over 35 freakin yrs ago. Please somebody tell what palacios has done. But there are some good people in palacios. Im glad to see that the Garcia's are doing good in the business, Yall ***** folks couldn't keep them down.........OUT

Enough about the East and the West in Palacios. I want to clear up any misunderstanding once and for all. The east and the west is divided by the rail road tracks, which runs north and south, but you can't really say south because there is no south in Palacios. But there is east and west...back to the tracks. North is anything north of highway 35 which runs east and west. North is where the rich people live and make all the decisions, anyone living north of highway 35. The best way to describe the west, is trailer homes. When you see two on a lot, you're pretty close. When you see three on a lot, you're definitely in the west part of Palacios. I live on the west side, but luckily there are no trailors on my block - yet! There is an east, mostly older homes, but they do have drainage curbs for their streets. Hamlin's is the only store (IGA now) which survived on the west side of Palacios, resting only feet away from the rail road tracks, besides your beer joints and liquor stores. And might I add, there are some trailers which are taken care of and those are probably the ones who own where they live, and are not just renting. I hope I cleared up any misunderstanding about the south, west, east, north dilemma so we can move on to another subject. To learn more about the history of the rail road tracks' location, go visit www.rebel.com.

ah what a wonderful world this manunkind hath birthed. what an interesting coffeehouse.chatroom.shoutout.whatup?.guestbook this is...quite a departure from the coiffed beachfronts that are on display. but give the town its due, palacios was a unique place to be reared. betwixt the cultural tranvestitism of the ghetto/suburban lovechild lifestyle that several companions/chums embraced to the outright/subtle crossburning, one must concede that we actually did live quite well together. to think that one was exposed to asian, hispanic, african, and anglo/wasp cultures in a town the size of a large school/corporate office is praiseworthy. say what you will about the educational system (while certainly subpar as a whole), the experience was pleasant to those who were open to learn. for the unscrupulous, one can certainly find a pea under the mattress to bemoan the fate you have been dealt (or rather the fate you have made). while i certainly concede that the town was a bit chatty (naughty geese), and that some of the educators were far from being model citizens (though how would one define a good, model citizen? i consult aristotle's nichomachean ethics for an interesting point of reference for motives). yet i still found the experience an overall pleasant one. perhaps one could argue that my perspective is soiled with being SliGhtly idyllic and spending one too many hours in front of a books contents. a grand upbringing is afforded to those who would take advantage of it. circumstance and action/reaction dictate outcome. go sharks go help me its getting hot in HeRE wherever are the shrimp? thanks ccatexas ;-) lovely memories of shrimp and trips to port lavaca.victoria.bay city to visit friends and loved ones. and nights spent on the jetties, bless those structures.
and did i mention this lovely electronic periodical which provides this forum for contacting those with whom correspondence has been few and far between. city council please invest in the community what is LeFt of it. quite a site it could be were scruples exercised by those in power. but i suppose money+power begets megalomania even in the sticks. its always a bullychild pleasure to hold out the small piece of candy whilst the larger piece is behind your back. citizens of fair palacios ReaLize that you control the future of that town (without sounding tOO cliched)...if the shrimpers are gone, if no outside investors (though not a huge fan of multi-nationals) are not present, if tourism (please no germans with socks-sandals) is gone the town will bleed slowly. go to a city council meeting. hell go to a commissioners court meeting. know what fate they are deciding for you. open the records and check all of the diagonals. and don't fall through the ice...good day..what up class of '**

Hello again. I held off on writing a bit because the Beacon was deleting it all anyway. I too felt that the latest guest book's entries were more heartfelt than those I'd seen before. But what to say and not sound offensive? The Dairy Queen is nice, and there used to be a nice place across the street where those Skating Rinks used to park, and when they weren't there, people would go party there after a football game. That's what's nice about Palacios. They had the internet and chat rooms long before anyone else in America, they just called it highway 35 and all the small streets in Palacios, and would chat from their cars. Someone would decide we were going to meet at the "wells" or in a parking lot somewhere, and that was the chat room. Not such a small town after all huh?

For the person writing about censorship: I read your entry twice and I have to say I cannot make out what it is you're try to say. I have no doubt J.D. Salinger himself would have trouble understanding that synopsis of Catcher in the Rye.
Palacios High Alumnus <sayso23@hotmail.com>

I'm shocked someone would write in one week complaining of the guestbook not being fun, and then turn around and have the nerve to write in from Bay City - of all places - and call Palacios the outcast of Matagorda. Thank you Sandy for letting me realize that I could still be offended by the snobs some people become, and that Palacios is not all that bad. When we were growing up dating and having to drive to Bay City for a movie, you couldn't come outside not worrying that there would be 5 guys sitting on top of your car making obscene gestures at our girlfriends. Bay City's school district is no better than Palacios and how dare you write in to the Palacios Beacon to call us the outcast of Matagorda. Your court house pecans are the best thing Bay City ever gave me!

Does the Daily Tribune have any place on line to write? Just curious. Alcoa is still up and running, and a near city of a Formosa plant I'm sure has brought many many jobs to all the surrounding cities. So Palacios has not died. Their Bed and Breakfasts are in many magazines and rated #1 even by some. I'd rather be a hick from the sticks than a snob from Bay City. Our shrimping business has probably brought in more money than anything Bay City has to offer. And unlike Bay City, the vet clinic is the about the farthest we go "out of town" to claim as our own, Bay City thinks they are only 7 miles from Palacios and two miles from the coast.

Proud Palacian.

Matagorda Pariah

Hello
Kellie <tweety1773@yahoo.com>
Palacios, tx USA -
Why would the Beacon have to edit anything if it was not offensive? I saw what somebody wrote the other day, and it might have dragged on, but it never said one thing negative. Are you going to edit this Mr. Beacon? Read the Catcher In The Rye. It is somewhat subtly about censorship, whose author knew for sure his work would one day be censored in America, and wrotten unabridgedly the best book to date mocking that exact thing. His book summed up would be the mom whose marriage date is ??51 but whose first kid was born ??50 and is determined to make her children believe in practicing safe-no-children-before-marriage. That's censorship. Only the dumbest are blind folded.

Thank you Mr. Beacon if you leave this innocent comment on line. But I know, we all know the media controls the world, what to believe, what to say, what not to say, and even what's not be said.

If anyone is in need of free kindness and genuine caring, Palacios is where it is.
Three years ago my wife and I were strangers to Texas. We were given shelter for several weeks by people we met at ST. Anthony's Catholic church. T.S.T.C. let us take showers there, and I.G.A. grocery store and Little People day care gave us jobs. Dr. Farrel at Wagner hospital is an excellent doctor with compassion in his caring. The easy going community has the nicest people and the freshest seafood all in one place.

Hi again. You know Palacios died when production of the Alcoa plant in Pt. Comfort shut down. Many people moved away then. And after that the town never came back. There was a movie there many years ago. Places to go. Skating Rinks came to town, etc. I was raised in Palacios, but would never go back and raise my child there. It is pretty much for the older retired set. We always had good teachers, great ones then.
Don't know about now, but then we did. But these days in all school districts there are horrible teachers. Many do not even like kids but are teaching them. Makes sense huh?
Anyway, Palacios will never be what it used to be. And you know it is the outcast of Matagorda County. No help there. Not many kids do stay there after graduating. And probably never will. UH-OH! This is turning out to be a book. :-)

As someone who is not from Palacios, my impression of your town is completely from this website and it's posts. I check it from time to time and actually wrote for the first time a few days ago. From all of the 'shout outs' and 'Whatzups,' Palacios doesn't look like a very interesting town to be from. The interesting and thought provoking entries in the past week have made a few people mad, but why? Because some stated their opinion and can spark a controversy while others who aren't intelligent enough to take that and process it into meaning. Those who are upset with the recent interesting posts must not have those capibilities. Everyone needs to look at where they are from as an outsider and see the impression that all of these 'shout outs' give. Not a very good one. Why would someone want to raise their families the kind of environment where people are told what to think and they cannot voice their opinion. An intelligent person will look at this site and see what your community is about. Obviously nothing. No community is prefect, everyone knows that all places have problems and why not face them head on. This site should allow citizens and former citizens to voice the problems that they see in the community so that the problems can be fixed, as well as what positive thing they see there. This website is a refelection of your community, and seeing that all you have are 'shout outs' you are not without fault. Please look at your community from the outside and see what these posts really mean.

Okay, Okay, y'all win. This site should not be a place to come on and state a true opinion about anything (that sort of thing should be left for clean white rail cars just itching for another gang sign), it should simply be used for Shout Outs. Like they do on the radio. Just like the Presidential debates, we should get up in front of our children and just say what "people want to hear...I believe in abortion but only after contraception but no seniors should not be allowed government tax money to pay for their viagra but an abortion is okay for the elderly and I will cut your taxes in half and if we use the electric chair for abortions we're gonna save you money like Gallery Furniture." That's why small towns don't grow. That's why rich people never come in and invest any money in Palacios, because all those around feel that they own it and will have a say in it. Even the STP (nuclear power plant) doesn't claim Palacios, it's located in Bay City! And the minute the "voice" doesn't agree with it, it's time to bring out the pickets and put us right on Santa Fe's friendship list. They've edited so much of what I said before, that they should have just erased it as it now sounds as if a 3rd grader wrote it. My advice would be for the Beacon to continue a different "Guestbook" where people can just go to voice their own opinions and one where others can just write in what you want to hear: Wasssssuupppp? I wanna give a shout out to all my homies on the east west and co chilly side boss.

Just wanted to say wassssuuuuppp? Go New York, I hope they take the World Series! Hillary's already done the State some good, yo see? It's all good.

IT's not the first impression you get one chance at, it's the lasting one.

Mr. Bojangles met me on line and danced a jig but misunderstood that I wanted to hear psychological analysis of Palacios, not me. My only original point was that Palacios people are good people at heart, yet so quick to judge. No one is blaming anyone. As a war veteran would not blame his enemy for being captured but himself instead, that is the key to survival. No matter if I'm from a household of one mom and two dads, or if I'm from the great grocery family, or if I'm just a cook after school at the popular drive-in, no one will pay my bills but me. If I go out and rob a store, if I am caught, no one will go to jail for me, no matter my color. The bully/picked on theory you had was not far off, yet it only degrades those not willing to further themselves after high school. In other words, those picked on, could have given up on life because boo-hoo they had no friends. But their goals in life might have never included having friends. Yet, people who thought they were taught to "read their lesson" by a teacher, should have read a good book instead that would have taught them to learn on their own. That's how kids learn better, you read you see, you hear, you remember. Attack education from every angle. Anyway though, Palacios still has it. All the gossip, all the good people, like any other town in America. The people who survive and succeed, are the ones who know how to ignore those in line who are just trying to keep them down to keep their job. Or as in the old monty pythonian proverb, take the story of the crabs being held captive without a lid. "Oh don't worry, they don't need a lid, they'll keep each other in the bucket. How? Because, as soon as one gets closer to the top, the others will pull him down. Don't worry, it's been this way for a long time".
Remember, the guys in the high school band got made fun of because they didn't play football, but they also used to ride home with all the women after the Friday night game. No sweat, no bruises, perfume, and holding hands. Secret of life?

Hello again, I'd like to respond to Skip's nice Letter, Skip even though there is only 3 stop lights in palacios, the "west side" is thousands of miles from the "east side". No matter where you live, you are always in your own world. And if the "minority priority wagon" was the wagon to hop on, then there would have been more than "one African American teacher". Skip, you seem bright and seems like you've done good for yourself. But i don't think anybody is blaming anyone for anything. It seems to me that you were unpopular back at PHS and that one teacher didn't pay to much attention to you. You probably got picked on and hated going to school. But you turned alright. But HEY, thats just my psychological profile of you............OUT

Please don't take things so seriously...this is a place that everyone can write their thoughts and feelings. Not just "WHATZUP!" That is what I am tired of looking at. This guestbook gives everyone something to write about, yet it also is the first impression of our community for those who are not from Palacios. I want to believe that Palacios is an small community with some intelligent citizens and if all others see is "WHATZUP!" then what do they think of our town? Please remember that everyone has their right to voice thier own opinions, good or bad, but please don't make Palacios look like some small town full of dumb citizens that cannot have intelligent, thought provoking ideas.

I am very interested in the psychology of a small town like Palacios. You grow up loving your hometown, glad you're not from Bay City, thank God you're not from Blessing...or El Campo, or anywhere else but Pulashus. Yet, at the same time you're proud, you make fun of "losing another football game", you make fun because you have no movie theater there, there's only three stop lights in town, you're no more from the west side as you are from the east. You'll brag that there were only 10 people in some of your classes (teacher to student ratio very good for these days' standards) then turn around and hate your class because you only had a two-digit graduation list. So you graduate and meet the big city. Though you are drawn to the big city lights, you won't feel at home until you pull into the drive of a nice house whose horizon escapes the farthest skyscraper. And soon you find that going shopping in the downtown area (or some posh cities refer to this part of town, as the Historic District), is too much hassle. You're stuck between a mad arab in a cab and a mad american trying to get into your lane, the lane you have been trying to get out of since you pulled off the loop in the first place. Ah, but the name of a big town, H-Town maybe, that's where it's at. No gangs in that town. Your Real Estate agent, who has a nice home in the country by the way, uses catch phrases like "a small stretch from the main loop yet luxuriously located in the quaint suberb of Rustic Oaks", "You'll get the fun of the city while enjoying the peace of country living" located just behind Kroger's. Oh, but who is at fault for not knowing when we're happy becuase we're supposed to be, or sad because we were supposed to be happy and are not? It's Palacios' fault right? I think it's more the fault of the entertainment industry starting out with the show "Dallas". Though, when it was popular, I think people realized this was a show (soap opera in the least), and not real life. Somehow, America decided this was the way of real life, suit and tie looked classy, as did eyeshadow and Gucci bags. Soon Dillard's became the place to get your ticket to ride, credit cards buying what you could not afford today but somehow made sense out of making it possible to afford tomorrow with an 18% interest rate. Where a parent used to could be proud to give a modest car to their child to drive to school, as long as it got 'em there, was now a place being created right off the silver screen where the tags were worth more than the kid driving it. Palacios is to blame. Enter Oprah Winfrey. Never mind. Somehow I slept through the time period we used to make fun of soap actors' accents and suddenly now made fun of those who could not adapt to this extravagant lifestyle. It's the whole Cup-of-coffee-chino ideal being poured over the entire American culture at once, way too hot to handle but who is going to stand up to the present day ills while it's so much easier to attack yesterday for in that we are able to say, I am so smart now, if only I had known this when. Palacios is to blame. Yes, Pulashus has its faults, and its teachers did too. Eating and wining and dining with the richest folks I've ever met, meaning everyone there but me, had a networth of over a million dollars a year, I learned that those people are actually happy, as are the poor. Those in the middle are usually the ones who don't know where they stand. And it's not Palacios' fault. It's our own, for not knowing where we stand. Blaming parents, teachers, priests, even policemen for where we are in life. So why vent my thoughts but not name my name? Those who live in glass houses, should be so unlucky as to pass a glass stone from drinking too much Coke. Think on this for a moment. If you could be God for a day (or 33 years), what town would you live in? Whether it's Texas or Jerusalem, you will as long as you're human, eat, sleep and die just the same. Be happy where you're at, for tomorrow you may not be so happy.

I remember the Blue Capricorn, i also remember the teachers..They weren't all bad, I remember Larry D., he always gave a lesson in life, but one thing i have to disagree with mr. D, and that is even if i didnt know government, it was still boring....but you did a good job. miss arrendondo was pretty cool also...but then you had some other teachers, who shouldnt have been teachers. they were, just plain racists....but they couldnt help it, thats the way they were raised and didnt know any better. And it didnt help that some of us lived up to the stereo-type that has been pinned on us.....LOUD, thiefs and much more, but just remember not everyone should be stereo-typed.
I remember once a teacher said that the bully who always beat up the GEEK would one day be working for the geek....and its true, not in all cases, but in most. but you know in most cases the bully usually had it worst, probably low-income family, dysfunctional family or whatever....I'm not trying to make excuses, but its a fact, some kids get more chances than others...and its not just financial, it starts off financial, If you come from a family like the Cleavers you will get treated better than if you come from a single family or family where you have 5 step-fathers in 3 years....but i guess its not just in palacios, Hell look at the NFL. all-american, clean-cut Troy Aikman would never get replaced with African-American Randall Cunningham. How dare they even think about it.........OUT

Just wanted to tell anyone from the class of 1991, there is a website for our class reunion being planned for June of 2001. It is: Palacios1991.bizland.com Please send any request/comments through that email. I'd like to respond to the person not happy with his/her teachers: you'd be surprised how much you can resolve when you confront someone in private about any situation, that is if you are looking for a resolution. Palacios is Small Town America, and either you love it or you hate it. If you're looking for big city lights, you won't find any there. If you're looking for a pro football team and stadium there, you won't find it. But neither will you find those big city taxes, traffic, or smog. I don't know of any school district that has perfected they way they hire teachers to "weed" out the few who would have made better students than teachers. But one rotten apple (or teacher) is not enough to hate an entire town, or the people of that town. If you're out of school now, become active in the school district. Move back to Palacios and fight for your beliefs, if you want a resolution, and join the school board so you might can have a say in deciding who the future teachers will be. It's too easy to sit and point at people just for making conversation. All towns would benefit if the teachers who are actually teaching were paid more. That would be a thing to fight for. And if you are indeed paying more, then you can demand more. I work right now with many former teachers of subjects ranging from Biology to English, and they all say they would have stayed teaching (the job they really loved) had the money been better. I know not all my teachers liked me (please, no emails or ticking packages...and don't try to be the first uni-email-bomber) and probably did gossip about me, but we did the same as students...gossip will probably determine our next commander in chief. But as I've said, one bad apple no matter how rotten, could not take away the education those other great, great teachers and coaches gave to me. But if you do find the perfect school where to raise a child without fault, please let me know so we can charge millions for admission. Therefore, if I am elected...

It sounds like things are exactly the way they always were at Palacios schools. I totally agree with the letter about the teachers. There are some great people in Palacios, it just seems like a lot of the bad ones are employed with the school district. It's too bad some of them can't teach as well as they can gossip about their students.

I grew up in Palacios and I can tell anyone that it truly is a great town. It is a great town but the people are what brings Palacios down. Now don't get me wrong, there are definitely some great people from Palacios, but there are too many of you who simply care too much about others lives instead of your own. The junior high and high school faculties are one of the main problems. The teachers are too busy gossiping about who is doing what on the weekends when they should only be concerned with the education of their students. Afterall they got their degrees in education and not gossip right? Hypocrites, Hypocrites, Hypocrites!!! Teachers it is none of your business what your students do on the weekends. They have rights too!!! If Palacios is so concerned with this beautification project, why don't you start with beautifying the inside with the people of this town first. I know that it is a small town but it is really really bad when you surpass the stereotypes of small towns. We are terrible. When I talk of days past in Palacios to my friends from other towns all they can say is, "Man that is really bad!!!" or "Gee, I thought my town was bad!!!" Another issue is the sports programs at PHS. C'mon parents you have to let your kids lead their own lives. What are you going to do when they go to college? Are you going to complain to the profs for failing your kids. When coaches yell at kids, they are teaching them to be tough, they are teaching them self discipline. Your kids are going to need this when they get out in the real world. Please parents you have to stop interferring with the athletic programs at PHS. You are the reason why we will never produce high quality teams. If you kid has no talent, dont be surprised if he/she sits on the bench. High school sports are designed to make it to state, not to play everyone on the team to satisfy parents. That is what junior high was for. Pleases parents quits raising pusilanimous children. Well I believe that is all I wanted to say. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this.

I use to live in Palacios when I was a child. I also went to school there, and enjoyed the area. My parents and I use to move around quite a bit as I was growing up. And to me, Palacios was my first home. I can remember smelling the salt air that would blow off of the bay. I remember my parents use to own a bay boat called the Dannylynn. My brother and I sold the crabs and my parents sold the fish and shrimp. One day, my dad went out into the bay with a young man named Herman Austin, and they brought back a seven hundred pound turtle. Our boat was leaning on one side, as it entered the docks.

I am originally from Deutschburg Community and graduated from Palacios in 1972. I am currently the President of the Chamber of Commerce in Port Lavaca, and we have been trying to obtain grants for our Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse Visitors Center. In the process of doing so, we received a letter from a Jerry K. Deutsch with Banc One Securities Corp. in Houston who has a strong interest not only in our lighthouse, but also Palacios. His grandfather, Joe L. Deutsch, was a mayor of Palacios for 10 years in the first half ot the twentieth century. His father, Joe L. Deutsch, Jr., was a football captain at PHS in 1921 or 1922. His grandather, Maude Hill Deutsch, and aunt, Jay Hill Rhodes, were both raised in the Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse in the years just before and after 1900. After speaking with Jerry on the phone, he has asked for my help in establishing an annual football scholorship at PHS in memory of his father, which I am working on, and has also asked for any historical information I can obtain in regards to any/all of his family members. He also knows that some of his relatives came in to this country from Germany through Indianola. He is not certain of the connection with his family and the Deutschburg Community, but feels certain there must be some connection.

If you can help me in obtaining any information that I can furnish to him, it would be greatly appreciated. As soon as I can arrange, he plans a trip to our area to 1) visit the lighthouse he has never seen, 2) visit Palacios and Deutschburg community, and 3) go on a tour of our county, to include Indianola.

Thanks for your help, and you can reach me at either of the e-mail address listed above, or my phone number at work is 552-4567 (not long distance) or
1-800-260-5499. Look forward to hearing from you.

I was pleasantly surprised to see your paper online. My mother grew up in Palacios and worked at the hospital after my father retired. They lived at Cape Carancahua for a number of years before moving to my Father’s hometown of Cleveland, Texas. As a child, I visited Palacios an average of two weeks out of the year and loved the City, the Pavilion, those salty line snow cones at the drugstore and all the other things about it. My grandparents were David Quinn and Mishie Quinn. My mother is Gladys Evelyn Quinn Burkett. She married my father over 50 years ago in Bay City, Texas. I now live in Charleston, South Carolina. I am the first person in my family to move permanently out of Texas although I hope to retire there one day.

I can assuredly tell all Texas, it is true—-”there is no other place like Texas.” It is special and so unique and the people are the same. Keep up the good work. I love seeing names that I still recognize popping up in your paper that I recall from my visits to my grandparent’s home.

Hey all. Sure hated to leave PHS after 1960 school year. Never have forgot it either. The 9th & 10th grades were really fun and although small, the Shark Band was great to be in. I have run into a few of you and hopefully, the reunion coming up at the end of Sept., I will see more. In the yearbook I was listed as Wilburn Jones: 1958-59 and 1959-60. Thanks Palacios Beacon for putting Palacios on the map by being on line.

Thanks Sharks for helping with the Shark winning tradition. Remember, when the score board indicates you've lost----you haven't. I remember playing in a game with Vanderbilt in 1950. Industrial had us 20-0 at the half and our fans had left the stands under sheets of rain from cold norther. We won the game on penetrations and downs 20-20 score. Just keep on fighting sharks.

What happened to - "Bats eat 3000 mosquitos in one hour"? That query was erased! The new plans to make 4 reserviors at the lower end of the colorado river basin will help lower the misquito population, by flooding some of the wetlandsThe resevoirs will directly lower the chances of an epidemic; the risk of misquito viruses!; that can save lives! Support for resevoirs will help a year round population of fish that eat misquito larvae! That's a sure cure for the misquito problem.

I was only in 2nd grade, but remember. It was really scary coming home to that disaster. Remember the houses on 35. Hi Nick,
David Wolbrueck told me about your website. This is great! Now, I'll be able
to keep up with the Matagorda Co. news. I left Bay City six years ago to go to
work for the Girl Scouts in Corpus Christi. Two years ago I moved to Orlando,
Fla., to work for the Girl Scouts here and I love it! I'm the communications
manager and I write, edit and layout the publications, brochures and fliers
for our council. I just finished overseeing a three-day photo shoot in which
photos from this shoot will be used in our 2002 Girl Scout calendar.
My brother and his family live here, so I am enjoying watching my niece
and nephew grow up. Again, I enjoyed your website! Keep up the good work,
Nick!

That little boy is "13" years old and I still have your stethoscope. He's in the 8th grade this year and is a straight A student. It's great hearing from you. Living in Palacios during the "60's" was great. Fun places to remember, the Moo Moo, the Teeze Freeze, being in band and the new high school and we swam in the bay all the time, did you?

I am so sorry Palacios is losing Wagner General Hospital. I feel there should be an investigation into the closing and figures should be presented. You have no idea how many people will loose their lives on the way to the nearest hospital. Contact your county commissioner and demand an accounting.
Hey, Ginger Shearer, does that "little boy" of yours still have my stethoscope?" I hope he put it to good use. My brother Jerry is thinking about moving back to Palacios. I sure hope he likes it. Again, I ask you to fight for your hospital. Talk with some of the former employees and associates. Don't let Palacios die-this is the first step down the road.

Gwen visits every other day and I get lots of mail from Donnie Faye Cosby and Charles (Bill)Wilson that is currently a free lance writer and world traveler...I would love to hear from Elka, I hear she is back in Palacios....also I got Joanna Hendricks note from Yellowstone (alias Coach-a-Mo) Love to you all.....remmeber the Seine? the Beacon use to print it...High School News....that got me in trouble a few times....Jo Ann

I have been reading you online for some time now and you are GREAT. I usually bring it up every Tuesday afternoon. I have been reading the articles on Hurricane Carla and I love early files & News. I made a copy of Carla for Johnnie Glaros who was in the Class of 1936 and Ruth Petersen Blanton who was in the Class of 1939. Thanks for such a fine report.

I graduated from Palacios High School in 1939. We moved to Palacios in 1926. Somebody in your newspaper really knows computers. At my age I, like so many my age, fought computers when they first became popular. Now I would not be without one.

Sir,
My cousin in Houston somehow found your newpaper on-line. We're very interested in Mr. R.B.Trull of the Rice Foundation. Our lineage on one side of the family<(grandmother} was
a Trull. If you ever do an article on him or in some fashion can convey to him our interest would be much appreicated. The Trull's settled in Mississippi, and eventually moved to Texas around the turn of the century.
It's great that your paper has went on-line and I suspect that I will from time to time look over on whats happening in Palacios. Thanks again.

Hi Everybody, and congratulations to the Beacon for having such a good site! I spent most of my growing-up years in Palacios, graduating in 1960. I'll always be grateful for experiencing the "Fabulous Fifties" in a small town. My kids say they are envious of me for having had that experience. My classmates were (and are) very much like family to me, and I'm looking forward to seeing all of you plus the classes of '58, '59, '61, and '62 (and other special friends from other classes) at our big "Millenium Reunion" in Sept. BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!! Love, Carole Jean Chamberlain Glowka (cjglowka@yahoo.com)

Hi everyone, this is great being able to write and visit online with everyone. I don't get to Palacios very often, but the older I get the more I would like to retire there and enjoy the setting sun over the bay. I try to visit Gaye and Jan whenever I can. Mother and I shop for her groceries and always enjoy eating lunch there and we often see many of our friends. I'm looking forward to hearing from some of you that I have not seen in a long time. Love and kisses, Ginger (Shearer) Hennig

I remember the Moo-Moo. Great food. Also the Teeze-Freeze. Great hangout and food.
And the Harbor Drive In. The restaurant where you could get good food late at night was called The Loop, I think. Guess we all have those memories of Palacios at better times.

The MooMoo was cool but how about The Harbor Inn Drivein??? Many a lost night started there...Or how about eating enchaladas late at night at the (can't think of the cafe) but it was at the end of main street by Brandon's store.

Yes, the Moo-Moo! Glass gallon bottle that you put a nipple/pourer on after you got it home. Like a big baby bottle. Moo-Moo was run by the Kutach family. They made a great Sissyburger--no onions or mustard.

Yes! The Moo-Moo! Does anyone remember going there to buy milk in glass bottles? Return the bottle for the deposit or the deposit amount off your next bottle of milk. Old days, fond memories.

Great job on the website. I sure enjoyed the pictures. It makes me long for good ole Palacios. My family is from Palacios. We are the Boultinghouse. I am Roy's daughter. I still have two aunts living there, plus assorted friends. If anyone sees Betty or Linda tell them Mary Lous said hi. Will be sure and come back often.
I also got a kick when I read the reference to the Moo-Moo. Does anyone remember the Teaz-Freeze?? I tell folks about the Moo-Moo and they think I am crazy. I'm glad I'm not.

You have a great web site and you are to be congratulated for the detailed effort you put into it. I hope anyone who lives in your fair city can help me. I am doing research on Camp Hulen. My brother was stationed there in 1942 or 43 and, my hopes are to present him with these findings and in the hopes it will not only bring a tear to his eye but, a smile on his lips also. Right now I need any photos of the camp from back then and also, any memories anyone would have from back then. Many thanks to the Palacios Beacon for allowing me make this request. God Bless All Of You and you may call me collect at anytime at the
