The Centennial Planning Committee has prepared a schedule of planned events for the week, some of which require advance preparation and several events remain in need of a sponsor or a chairman/coordinator. In addition, other activities, such as a “men’s legs contest” and a talent show, may be added. Anyone with suggestions and those wishing to assist as a sponsor or chairman should attend the 6 p.m. Friday (March 27) Planning Committee meeting at City Hall or call either Joe Morton, 361-220-0738; Bert West, 972-3009; or Roberta Ripke, 972-3960. The tentative schedule is as follows: APRIL 15-23: Registration for Beard-Growing Contest at Baycel Federal Credit Union, sponsor. JUNE 1: Deadline for items to be placed in Time Capsule. WEEK OF JUNE 21: Citywide decorations (banners, bunting, flags) to go up. Coordinator needed. SUNDAY, JUNE 28: Sunrise Community Centennial Services at Texas Baptist Encampment; raising of US Flag that has flown over the US capitol at the Pavilion flagpole; Community breakfast. (sponsor needed for breakfast) Start of Centennial Attire Week Contest (sponsor-chairman needed) JUNE 29: Weeklong registration starts for out-of-town Palacios-born visitors, at Centennial headquarters (to be announced). Time to be set for: Men & Women’s Tricycle Races (KJZT-CFFT sponsor) No-Boat Boat Races (sponsor needed) and Kayak Races (sponsor needed) 2 p.m.: Old Fiddler’s Contest (sponsor needed) 4 p.m.: Speakers & Awards Program (Palacios-born man & woman traveling longest distance and present; Centennial Attire Contest winners, Beard-Growing Contest winners, Silent Auction winners, various other event winners, Loud Auction of leftover Silent Auction items) 6 p.m.: Centennial Monument Dedication & burying of Time Capsule in City Park. (City of Palacios sponsor) 7-10: Parking Lot Dance with music by The Rocketman (Sponsor needed) Palacios City Council opens all of its meetings with invocation, pledge of allegiance to the American Flag and a pledge to the Texas Flag. It now makes a third pledge— to the official City of Palacios Centennial Flag. The pledge is as follows: The City by the Sea, and to the citizens for which it stands. One community under God, working together to make us strong with truth, loyalty, justice and fairness to all.” The city flag allegiance was written by Roberta Ripke, a member of the Centennial Planning Committee. SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 388 WHEREAS, The City of Palacios was incorporated in 1909, bringing organization to a growing community; already the home of the Hotel Palacios, a newspaper, a railroad station and a popular pavilion built over the waters of the bay, Palacios soon began organizing churches and schools to meet the needs of its growing populace; and WHEREAS, Through the years, Palacios has continued to grow and prosper; it has been a center for the oyster business and home to Camp Hulen, which served the nation as a military post during World War II; and WHEREAS, Today, Palacios has a flourishing seafood industry, which is celebrated at the annual Shrimp-o-Ree; many seasonal residents call Palacios their winter home, and residents alike enjoy birding, fishing, strolling along the Seawall, and other activities; the area’s history is brought to life with reenactments of the LaSalle Landing, and the historic Hill Building is being renovated as the city’s museum; and WHEREAS, Palacios offers its residents excellent business opportunities and recreational outlets; its citizens are rightly proud of its important role in the region’s history and its standing as an exemplary place in which to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Palacios on their many contributions to our state and extend to them best wishes for a memorable 100th anniversary celebration; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the city as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
