TENTATIVE SCHEDULE FOR PALACIOS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION


Although numerous events related to Palacios’ 100th birthday year will be held throughout the upcoming months, the week of June 28-July 4 is planned as the major week of activities, concluding with two nights of spectacular fireworks.

The Centennial Planning Committee has prepared a schedule of planned events for the week, some of which require advance preparation and several events remain in need of a sponsor or a chairman/coordinator.

In addition, other activities, such as a “men’s legs contest” and a talent show, may be added.

Anyone with suggestions and those wishing to assist as a sponsor or chairman should attend the 6 p.m. Friday (March 27) Planning Committee meeting at City Hall or call either Joe Morton, 361-220-0738; Bert West, 972-3009; or Roberta Ripke, 972-3960.

The tentative schedule is as follows:

APRIL 15-23: Registration for Beard-Growing Contest at Baycel Federal Credit Union, sponsor.

JUNE 1: Deadline for items to be placed in Time Capsule.

WEEK OF JUNE 21: Citywide decorations (banners, bunting, flags) to go up. Coordinator needed.

SUNDAY, JUNE 28: Sunrise Community Centennial Services at Texas Baptist Encampment; raising of US Flag that has flown over the US capitol at the Pavilion flagpole; Community breakfast. (sponsor needed for breakfast)

Start of Centennial Attire Week Contest (sponsor-chairman needed)

JUNE 29: Weeklong registration starts for out-of-town Palacios-born visitors, at Centennial headquarters (to be announced).

Tour of Historic Homes (Peggy Hafernick & Edith Gower, co-chairmen)
Antique & Flea Market Bazaar at Recreation Center (Sandra Warchesik, chairman)
Quilt Show (Peggy Morton, chairman)

7:30 a.m.: Men & Women Three-Mile Run (sponsor, cordinator needed)
8:30 a.m.: Men & Women One-Mile Challenge Run (sponsor, coordinator needed)
9 a.m.-4 p.m.: Silent Auction (Full Stringer Realty sponsor)
10 a.m.: LaSalle Landing Re-Enactment (PAF, PAHA, PYC sponsors)
1 p.m.: Grand Re-Opening of City by the Sea Museum (PAHA sponsor)

4 p.m.: Speakers & Awards Program (Palacios-born man & woman traveling longest distance and present; Centennial Attire Contest winners, Beard-Growing Contest winners, Silent Auction winners, various other event winners, Loud Auction of leftover Silent Auction items)

6 p.m.: Centennial Monument Dedication & burying of Time Capsule in City Park. (City of Palacios sponsor)

7-10: Parking Lot Dance with music by The Rocketman (Sponsor needed)
10:15: Closing Fireworks (Lions Club)

CITY COUNCIL ADDS ‘PLEDGE’ TO CITY OF PALACIOS CENTENNIAL FLAG

Palacios City Council opens all of its meetings with invocation, pledge of allegiance to the American Flag and a pledge to the Texas Flag. It now makes a third pledge— to the official City of Palacios Centennial Flag. The pledge is as follows:

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of Palacios,
The City by the Sea,
and to the citizens for which it stands.
One community under God,
working together to make us strong
with truth, loyalty, justice and fairness to all.”


The city flag allegiance was written by Roberta Ripke, a member of the Centennial Planning Committee.


TEXAS SENATE RESOLUTION HONORS PALACIOS CENTENNIAL

SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 388
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the City of Palacios on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, The City of Palacios was incorporated in 1909, bringing organization to a growing community; already the home of the Hotel Palacios, a newspaper, a railroad station and a popular pavilion built over the waters of the bay, Palacios soon began organizing churches and schools to meet the needs of its growing populace; and

WHEREAS, Through the years, Palacios has continued to grow and prosper; it has been a center for the oyster business and home to Camp Hulen, which served the nation as a military post during World War II; and

WHEREAS, Today, Palacios has a flourishing seafood industry, which is celebrated at the annual Shrimp-o-Ree; many seasonal residents call Palacios their winter home, and residents alike enjoy birding, fishing, strolling along the Seawall, and other activities; the area’s history is brought to life with reenactments of the LaSalle Landing, and the historic Hill Building is being renovated as the city’s museum; and

WHEREAS, Palacios offers its residents excellent business opportunities and recreational outlets; its citizens are rightly proud of its important role in the region’s history and its standing as an exemplary place in which to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Palacios on their many contributions to our state and extend to them best wishes for a memorable 100th anniversary celebration; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the city as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.

COUNTY PROCLAMATION SALUTES PALACIOS’ CENTENNIAL YEAR.

Matagorda County Judge Nate McDonald presented a proclamation to the City of Palacios in recognition of 2009 as being the city’s Centennial Year. Accepting the proclamation were Mayor Joe Morton and city councilmen Mark Latapie, Bert West, James Georgi, Troy Lewis and Andy Erdelt.

The proclamation read as follows:

“Whereas, the Commissioners Court of Matagorda County would like to recognize the year 2009 as being the Centennial Birthday Year for the City of Palacios as an incorporated city in Matagorda County; and

“Whereas, the City of Palacios, and many of its citizens over the past 100 years have made valuable contributions to the development and growth, not only for the Palacios community, but for Matagorda County, Texas, and the Nation as a whole; and

“Whereas, the City of Palacios, known as the “City by the Sea” has contributed greatly to the tourism and recreational activities promoting this great county, working side by side with Matagorda County; and

“Whereas, the City of Palacios is planning many activities, events and observances throughout the year of 2009 that will deservingly attract many former residents, friends, tourists and travelers from throughout the state, the country, and the world, and

“Whereas, this Court encourages all of Matagorda County to support the City of Palacios so that this special year becomes a successful one.

“Now Therefore Be It Resolved, that we the Commissioners’ Court of Matagorda County, Texas, do hereby extend the heartiest Happy 100th Birthday greetings to the City of Palacios and its citizens, and urges all citizens of Matagorda County to exhibit the true Texas Spirit in welcoming one and all to our beautiful “City by the Sea” in Matagorda County, and to join the Centennial Birthday Year Celebration for the City of Palacios.

“Dated this 2nd day of March 2009.”
